Hilton Hassell
(1910-1980)
Hilton Macdonald Hassell, born in Lachine, Quebec, studied at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto under notable instructors such as J.W. Beatty, J.E.H. MacDonald, and F.H. Johnston. He furthered his education at the Heatherley School of Art in London, England, under Hayward Veal.
After working in graphic media at Brigden’s Limited, Hassell transitioned to full-time painting in 1955. His artistic practice spanned oil, watercolour, and acrylic mediums, with subjects that included figures, portraits, landscapes, and coastal scenes. He traveled extensively, painting in locations such as Spain, Ireland, Sussex, Massachusetts, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, British Columbia, and the Canadian Arctic.
A respected member of both the Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy, Hassell exhibited regularly with the R.C.A. from 1936 to 1966. His work was also shown at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1960 and 1961, and at the Memorial University Art Gallery in St. John’s, Newfoundland, in 1965. He held solo exhibitions at Eaton’s Fine Art Galleries in Toronto and in Winnipeg during October-November 1965.
Hassell’s art is featured in significant Canadian corporate and private collections, marking him as an influential figure in Canadian art history.
