Nancy Ruth Jackson
(1952 – 1994)
Nancy Ruth Jackson was born in Elmer, New Jersey, in 1953, and now resides in Toronto, Ontario. Like many Canadian wood engravers, Jackson is largely self-taught. She began her journey into the art form after learning the basic principles of engraving, including tool construction and maintenance, from Toronto-based poet-artist and metal engraver A. Bruce Bradshaw.
After this foundational exposure, Jackson continued to develop her technique and personal style in the medium on her own.
Professionally, Jackson is a book designer and works as the art director for Kids Can Press in Toronto. She has contributed to several publications, including Stories of the Witch Queen (1986) by Peppermint Press, The Wars-winning Book Dragon (Macmillan of Canada, 1988), and Calendar of Holy Women (Peregrine Publishing, 1989).
While Jackson has not exhibited widely, her work has been featured in several prominent settings, including a solo exhibition at the Imagines Gallery in Toronto in 1986, and a group exhibition at the O’Keefe Centre in 1989. Additionally, she participated in the 49th and 51st exhibitions organized by the Society of Wood Engravers.
